Big Mistake – View from far away of the scenario when opening the steam drum of a water tube steam boiler manhole after opening the bottom water drum manhole

This is how it happened when you look from a distance.

Mabuk has opened up the manhole at the bottom of the boiler, and now he is opening the top.

Because he has to carry the heavy tools, he thinks that it is more convenient to open up the bottom manhole first.

Anyway, he thinks that by opening the bottom manhole, all the remaining boiler water can be drained away more easily.

It’s a big mistake!

Because the boiler is still hot, once the top manhole is opened, the hot air tends to rise up together with flash steam.

Fresh air is sucked up from the opened manhole at the bottom. A strong convection updraft of hot air rushes up from the top manhole. Mabuk could be scalded if he is too near. Luckily, he manages to dodge away from the strong current of hot air.

The correct way to do is to open the top manhole first, followed by the bottom manhole.

By opening up the top manhole first, the updraft of hot air is quite limited. When the bottom manhole is later opened, the person opening it will not be scalded because the air is sucked in rather than pushed out.
